History
William Barnes, the family patriarch, was living along the banks of the Tygart Valley River at the
time of the first census in 1782.  He had become one of the early entrepreneurs, having built a
grist mill at the mouth of a small stream draining the Pleasant Valley area long before the city
of Fairmont existed.  Great-grandfather, Richard Barnes, served with the Union Army during the
Civil War, returning June 20, 1865 and settling in the Greenbrier area of Harrison County.  
Grandfather, Erna, (a Republican) was one of the early union organizers sent to Matewan by
John L. Lewis.   Clark's Father, Howard, was a minister and missionary for the Regular
Baptist's, serving in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley and Central West Virginia.  Howard, (or
Barney) served with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CC Camps) in Morgan County and was a
veteran of WWII.  Clark's Mother's family, the Queens, hail from the Smoky Mountains of
Western North Carolina.

Present
Clark is married to the former Deborah Chewning of Coalton, West Virginia.  They are the
parents of four children
.  Debbie is Vice-President of Barnes & Associates, Inc. and an
Accounting graduate of Davis & Elkins College.  She is also a building contractor and
Vice-President of General Lee Properties, LLC.

The oldest son, Thadeus, is an Electrical Contractor l
iving in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  
Thad served with the U. S. Army as a Multiple Launch Rocket System Specialist in Korea and
Germany for five years.  Thad attended Shepherd College and Glenville State College.
 He will
be married soon to a Lancaster County lady.


Erickson, attended Shepherd College and served with the U. S. Marine Corps for four years in
Okinawa and Twenty-Nine Palms, California.  He r
ecently returned from service in Iraq and
resides in Atlanta, Georgia with wife, Ashley.


Daughter, Elizabeth, is married to Todd Miller and is the Office Manager of Heritage Hearing
Center, a family owned business.  Elizabeth attended Shepherd College serving as the
Women's Soccer Team's goalkeeper.  She and Todd reside in Elkins
, West Virginia.

Youngest daughter, Rachel, is a student at Shepherd University in West Virginia.  


Two exchange students who arrived in the Barnes household t
en years ago elected to remain
as part of the family.  Jan Raddatz and Danielle Ferriera
Jackson both graduated from
Shepherd U
niversity.  Dani lives in Charlestown, WV and teaches at Sherando H.S.
