Clark S. Barnes, the Senator
                                      Raised in Central West Virginia, the son of a Baptist Minister,
                                      Clark graduated from High School in Paden City, WV along the
                                      banks of the Ohio River.  He left home immediately upon grad-
                                      uation to work as a ranch hand at the Bill Rice Ranch in
                                      Murfreesboro, TN, a camping ministry for the deaf.  While in
                                      Tennessee, the homefolks made a move to Elkins, WV to which
                                      Clark returned.  He fell in love with the mountains and a young             
                                       lady from Coalton, WV (not necessarily in that order).  Married to           
                                       the former Deborah Chewning in February 1972, his country                 
                                       called in January 1973 and he headed for Fort Dix, NJ.
Following completion of training programs, Clark was assigned to the Engineer School at
Fort Belvoir, VA.  He also began attending Northern Virginia Community College with a
major in Technical Engineering.  He was later transferred to the Headquarters, US Army
Europe, Engineer Command in Heidelberg, Germany.  He and Debbie, along with first
child Thadeus, resided in the farm community of Rettigheim, Germany.
Upon his return to civilian life, Clark enrolled at Davis & Elkins College graduating with a
degree in Business Administration.  He then worked in Public Relations for the Elkins
office of Underground Technology Development Corporation, a firm involved in EPA
contracts and mine engineering headquartered in Alexandria, VA.
Continuing schooling throughout his working career, Clark obtained degrees from West
Virginia University and Pensacola Christian College.  For the past 20 years Clark has
primarily been involved with providing services to individuals with hearing loss.  He
managed practices in the Shenandoah Valley and Pensacola, FL for about three years
prior to starting his own businesses in Virginia and West Virginia.  He and Debbie sold
their business interests in Virginia in 1987 to focus their full attention on West Virginia.
Clark and Debbie have been involved with community youth programs for over 20 years.  
Clark served as the President of Seneca Soccer Club in Elkins for five years, acting also
as the West Virginia Director of Development for American Youth Soccer.  During this time
Clark assisted in the development of youth soccer programs in Petersburg and Franklin,
WV.  Clark later served as the Elkins High School Soccer coach for eight years while
Debbie became the Assistant Coach for Davis & Elkins'  first Women's soccer team.
Clark and Debbie attend Landmark Baptist Church in Elkins and continue to be actively
involved in community affairs.  
Clark is a member of  The American Legion, The Izaak
Walton League of America, The National Rifle Association,
The National Association of
Independent Business, The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and local Chambers of
Commerce in Upshur, Randolph, Pendleton, Grant, Hardy, and Pocahontas Counties.  He
is also a member of the
International Hearing Society, and is President of the West
Virginia Hearing Society.  He is Board Certified by the National Board for Certification in
Hearing Instrument Science.  He also serves on the Advisory Board for the Murfreesboro,
TN based Bill Rice Ranch Ministries for the Deaf.
